This is interesting. A recent eBay posting for a sideboard with no makers name but clearly a major effort put in to the use of 1/4 cut wood and making the piece look symetrical. The listing says its an original finish but it looks rather shiny and a little too bright to me (partly due to the flash). Nonetheless, the most interesting thing is the tag attached which lists the series of processes that the piece went through from the cabinet work construction to packing. We've discussed original finishes and processes alot in this forum, trying to decipher the mystery to some degree, and here's a solid example of what exactly this manufacturer actually did. Filling, Coating, Rubbing, Polishing. It appears that whoever did each stage was supposed to sign or initial the tag as it went along the line.

Hello Stonecat,
That is one beautiful piece and finished in the very same manner that I do when I work on a piece. Following is the manner that I use when finishing a piece;
Sand to 150 grit on all flat surfaces, and 200 on exposed end grain. Wash with three part of mineral spirits and the stain I wish to use. Allow to dry for 24 hours then sand with an #0 3 M synthetic steel wool and then hand rub the full strength stain on over lapping and blending all stain in to an even coating.
Allow to dry 24 to 36 hours. Sand again with the same #0 steel wool and apply the first coat of Minwax Tung Oil and allow to dry for 24 hours.
Sand this with the same #0 steel wool and apply my second coat of Tung Oil and allow to dry for 12 hours, then sand with #000 steel wool and apply the forth coat of Tung oil and when it is dry to the touch after about two hours I apply the next coat and so forth until I have achieved seven coats of the Oil. Rub with either a good paste wax or plain ordinary Pledge.

Here is a sample of my work.

Respectfully,
