Hi

I have a chance to buy this chair, an attributed J M Young chair. I compared it to the only one I could find on the web. Looks close. Any idea what Young furniture is worth? Priced like Stickley? or a bit less?
Thanks!

good chair, good company, looks to be original finish but a recovered (maybe replaced) cushion; quality can match Stickley (any of) but not quite the same premium put on the name - I'd say 200-400 range (depending on the cushion and if it needs repairs, how it looks close up, etc.)

Interesting stuff regarding Young is that they actually expanded operations in the 20s when other Mission makers died off, and they bought machinery and hired old staff from L&JG Stickley. They continued production into the 40s with much of the furniture for institutions, government offices etc.; much of what turns up is this later period. There is an out-of-print book about Young, if you can find it.

EDIT

...while surfing unsold lots at the recent Treadway auction, here's a Limbert arm chair for 275 for comparison (add buyers premium and tax so over 300); very similar chair in terms of construction steps, dimensions, etc.

Again, Stonecat saves the day!

I figured about the same for the price. It does have a replaced covering. Not a big fan of tan leather.

JM Young was based in Camden NY, Oneida region, lots of furniture makers from that part of NY.

Thanks again SC!
