Hello Friend,
Basically, they are one and the same thing, as I will explain later as I go along with the Arts and Crafts History. However the Art Nouveau dealt in a variety of things from Morris' stained glass, and some of the painters I have already mentioned. here are your metal crafters, embroidering and many other things too numerous to mention at this time. Thank you for your inquiry. Respectfully, http://hometown.aol.com/ralj7/index.htm |

Hello Again Friend,
To help you better understand the new style for the age; Art Nouveau, 1890-1914, explores a new style in arts and architecture that developed in Europe and America at the end of the nineteenth century. They divided into three sections: the first focuses on the Worlds Fair in Paris, where Art Nouveau was established the first new decorative style of the twentieth century. Second examines the sources that influenced the movement. Third looks at its development and fruitation in major cities in Europe and America. Art Nouveau, was the French meaning for the Arts and Crafts movement as it was in many ways a response to the Industrial Revolution. That was to take the mass produced forms of arts, furniture as well as many other things such as buildings, furniture, textiles, clothing, art and things dealing with every day life in general. I hope this helped to explain why they were essentially the same thing. Only the location being France rather than England and America. i think also, Mission style for the most part was a primary focus on the strength of furniture with minimum embelishment. Even the victorian furniture of the day was getting to be mass produced junk, where mission focused more on the joints, and quality. Art nov had a primary focus on blending other mediums (lead panels, stained glass, embroidery, stencils etc) into the finished piece.

Good Morning Rod,
You are 100% correct in your statement and I for one thank you for bringing out this point. During the revolt against the mass produced and ornate belongings of that era where only the well to do could afford, is what prompted the movement in all aspects. Thank you for your post and support. Now we are starting to make this a good working forum. Respectfully, Ralph Jones http://hometown.aol.com/ralj7/index.htm |
