I recently found an essay written by Walter Crane on the meaning of the Arts and Crafts movement. It's long, but I think that it gives an excellent overview of what he and his contemporaries had in mind concerning "Design and Handicraft". "The movement, however, towards a revival of design and handicraft, the effort to unite—or rather to re-unite—the artist and the craftsman, so sundered by the industrial conditions of our century, has been growing and gathering force for some time past." Walter Crane At the Left: Sir Percival by Walter Crane from the Arthurian Legends. |

Good Morning Lauren,
Thank you for posting this version of the Arts and Crafts History as seen by another's eyes and information. I did not take the time to read all of it at this time but, it sounds very interesting and compared to the one I wrote it deserves merit. Respectfully, Ralph Jones http://hometown.aol.com/ralj7/index.htm |
