the bauhaus was founded in 1919 by walter gropius as a rejection of the historicism that dominated art and architecture of the turn of the century, especially the Ecole des Beaux Arts in paris.
the view was of the future, where machines could relieve man of tedious labor, where clean design was equated with clean and healthy living. it was also supposed to produce quality goods for the masses. it was a if not the major influence on design and architecture through the first half of the century, both in europe and america. that said, this is a bit (way) off topic for this forum. the arts and crafts movement was the polar opposite in that it stressed workmanship and craft as the way to protect us from the machine age and the lifeless products it spat out. hope this helps, but you are like to find much more elsewhere. |
