Hello,

I try to do a short classification in design history like Decoration - Function - Emotion (the main design paradigma for a certain period) illustrated by famous chairs - and quotes.
I start Decoration with Thonet Chair No. 14 (sorry for that!) symbolising the decorative but also first industrial aspect in industrial design. Then for Function comes Bauhaus' tube chair by Mart Stam, then for Emotion probabely one of Philippe Starck.

I would like to add quotes, linked to Louis Sullivan's formula: "form follows function" (which is the appropriate one for Mart Stam's Chair). For Philippe Starck I thought of Hartmut Esslingers "form follows emotion" and that is why we now search one appropriate for the Arts & Crafts or Wiener Werkstätten Movement.
Is there a quote from Macintosh or Morris or Thonet you might know in the "form follows ..." - ductus?

That would mean a great help - and integrate the Arts & Crafts movement at least with its principles.

Thank you very much in advance!

Kind regards

Elisabeth

“Form follows function – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.”
