Greetings, glad to be part of the forum. To introduce myself....maybe it was seeing the leaded glass in some of my neighbors’ houses on Halloween, or Tolkien’s illustrations to his books, or the funeral homes in my hometown of Greensburg, but I’ve always admired the Edwardian style. To me, the American Arts and Crafts Movement occurred during a transitional period between when Americans sought to emulate European sophistication, read books, built beautiful houses, attended public lectures, and had manners –- and crass materialism, consumerism, anti-intellectualism, and no manners. I’ve always admired the Craftsman ideal of a home “ . . . built for comfort, arranged to afford the man . . . the utmost opportunities to pursue the work of his life contentedly and successfully.” Although, it must be admitted, not all Stickley furniture is so comfortable to sit on!

Welcome, good to have you on board.
I love your take on the A & C movement, a much classier era......
you know some mission furniture is uncomfortable but in most cases its the seat cushion, some times people keep the original spring cushion and the truth is they are firm but not comfortable a padded leather cushion is much better and since the design of A & C furniture is so simple it's all about the cushion.

Hello Fred,
Have you noticed how the members are growing and how they each bring something new to these forums, with knowledge to share in the various forums.
I am proud to be a senior member and greeting the new members makes me smile when I am able to greet a new member to the fold.

The main thing is to enlighten those with questions of the movement and how it all came about.

We are starting to have different voices of knowledge of the movement and the history of the different builders of furniture as well as the other topics covered within these pages.

Once again I wish all new members welcome and their involvement is without a doubt important to keep the movement alive.

Respectfully,

Ralph Jones Moderator
