Hello Mary May, You really found a jewel as that is without a doubt an Arts and Crafts Home. I want to call it a Bungalow but I am not sure on that account but, the stenciling on the wall is outstanding along with the room dividers and window and door trim. Where is this home located and would you allow folks to venture in for a look see? There are many on here who would just die for a glimpse of the decore.
Great find and I know that you will be proud of what you have found.
Thank you Ralph The home is located in Kingman Kansas and you are welcome anytime. I will post more pictures as soon as I can. The house delights us everytime we do something to it. As soon as our son closed we started pulling up carpet to reveal the beautiful oak floors. When we pulled the one layer of wall paper off, I could not believe one layer, the stenciling was revealed. THis weekend we discovered the big double sink in the laundry room is soapstone. All this in one week!
Mary may, What a treasure you have stumbled into and each day to are there you will find more things that will intrigue you as this was a real find and I am sure that your pride will grow with every passing day.
Your beautiful home is most definitely a Bungalow!
A side gabled 1.5 story bungalow with a gabled dormer.
The exposed rafter tails, knee braces, double hung windows, low pitched roof, built-ins, fireplace and large front porch (even though partially enclosed) are all characteristics of a bungalow.
Hopefully it will be full of many more surprises, and happy memories.
Thank you Lauren The realtor said it was a Sears home but we have not research this so we don't really know. The house was built in 1916. Does anyone know how we can save the stenciling? We want to paint and leave it for the boarder but I'm not sure how to clean it up, wall paper glue and such, without messing it up. Mary Ann
Hello Mary, There is a wall paper cleaner that is like playdough that you might try on the stencils in an inconspicuous spot and see how it works.
Your best bet would be to go to a paint store and find out what they have and maybe they can refer you to a specialist on such matters. It is worth the try.
Hello Rikki, Yes we did take many pictures. Thank goodness for digital camaras. We hope to recreate the stenciling but will have to find someone a lot more artistic than me! The original used so many different shades in the leaves. Very nice. I will post some pictues of the closeups later. The camara is at the other house. Mary
It might be a home From Montgomery Wards or Gordon van Tine. Will have to check out my two books by these companies. Some of the houses in the Wards book were obviously supplied by Gordon van Tine becuase the same house is in both books. Cabin Creek CDs sells cds of old catalogs, like house plans,Larkin Catalogs, etc. I plan to order some from them. They even have a cd of Bungalows by the L.F.Garlinghouse Company who is still in business.
Your home looks very much like ours, also built in 1916. I pulled this from the Central Michigan Historical Library, it looks like this Aladdin Homes model although the year is off. I hope this image posts!
Hilda and Biergoat, Thank you so much for helping me identify this home. Biergoat your house looks so much like ours I wish you would post more pics. Our house does not have an upstairs like the old picture and the den is built on the right side of the porch. We are working on painting walls and ceilings so I will post more pictures as we progress. Mary
