well I have started removing aluminum trim from my my roof(eaves?)and around my windows most of what I'm finding is good, I will need to replace and patch some wood any one have a clue as to what kind of wood to use, I have no idea what was used, was there a standard wood used? No I don't have pics yet, my home was built in 1917 its a mix of craftsman and arts & crafts full two story with an attic not exactly a four square but that best describes it. your input is much appreciated.
What was used will vary somewhat due to location. In the midwest a lot of painted exterior trim was yellow pine. What makes it stand up for so long was that it was old growth wood from cold climates (smaller annual growth rings makes denser wood). Since the exterior trim is nearly always painted, matching type is not quite as critical as it is for interiors. I'd go look for an architectural salvage place that might have old plain casing or timber that would have a tight grain. I think west coast homes often used redwood as it was nearby and durable also.
My father passed away at the end of February, he was a master of many trades and always helped me with my projects and as he aged was still my best source of advice he was a wise man and me were very close. As I have been cutting wood, ripping off aluminum I can feel dad with me with every swing of the hammer, its quite moving to think I'm not doing this project alone. Wow what a great way to get to know your house. The aluminum window trim and storm windows are off. I have replaced wood, caulked it primed it and I'm ready for paint. I will be using colors from Sherwin Williams arts & crafts line. This project has been wonderful for me. I will be posting pics soon.
