Dear Lisa,
I think that the best place to see Art Nouveau is Paris, France. The old subway stops have classically curving lines and shapes that mimic the sensuous serpentine forms of floral and fauna found in nature. There are quite a few building facades that anyone can see from the street that also scream, "I am Art Nouveau." (You can also travel to Brussels, Barcelona, Munich,Vienna, Prague, etc.) Now for the problem. You have your dates wrong for this forum. This website only talks about the American and English/European Arts and Crafts movement started by the Englishman, William Morris. The typical American dates for the A & C movement are 1900 to 1924 while the dates for Art Nouveau are from 1880 to 1910. Art Nouveau predates but overlaps the Arts and Crafts movement. Although both movements were reactions against the opulence and heavy ornamentation of the Victorian style, they had different philosophies. A & C promoted the beauty of handcrafted objects over mass produced Victorian furniture like Eastlake. Why not take a trip to your local library or just google Art Nouveau architecture? There is a lot of information out there. I hope this helps. Bev. |
