this house set on a high site with a steep stairway to the front porch. the doubled columns and strong gable half timber pattern give a presence that would not be the same if on a flat site.
Great variety, a little bit of a tudor look in this one, but the white trim would look better dark, in my opinion. This one also has an iron railing - were iron railings considered a common element of bungalow style, back in the day?
LOOKED AT SEVERAL BUNGALOWS SIMILAR TO THIS ONE,THE YARD AND THE STEEP STAIRS CAN BE A PROBLEM.THE BASEMENT/GARAGE ALL SEEM TO BE DARK AND DAMP, NONE WERE FINISHED PROBABLY FOR A GOOD REASON.A POSITIVE WAS YOU COULD PULL UNDER THE HOUSE WITH A VEHICLE AND MOST HELD TWO CARS.THE RAILING WAS PRESENT IN A FEW,MOST HAD NONE AND WERE MUCH STEEPER.
on this street, the houses sit high, but the garages, alleys and houses behind on the next street all sit at the level.
yes, i would think the stairs would be a nuisance in winter especially.
not sure about the railing being part of the aesthetic, but most houses on this block have them. they are a mix of bungalow and late victorian, so the iron may be a carryover.
i agree about the dark trim. someone (cant remember who) had an adage, never paint trim white. the tudor/half timber was fairly often shown on houses in the "Craftsman" and in the book of plans stickley published. mostly a reference to english cottage/rustic mindset.
I'm sorry but that is one STRANGE looking house - the little dormer looks silly on that huge roof - its crackin' me up as a matter of fact. No disrespect intended at all!

Yeah, it is a little weird, but in person it is quirky and full of character. I took this shot in a part of Richmond that is chock full of primarily bungalows and they are all different. The one thing about this one that always strikes me is the incredibly wide stance of the front porch columns, especially considering it is a fairly large house.
You won't find any new construction like this nowadays!
