i started the "Bungalow of the Day" several weeks ago in hopes of getting more people involved in a forum that seldom had any activity.
for many the heart of the arts and crafts movement was embodied in the houses that we now know as bungalows. the furniture, metalworks, textiles, pottery all needed a place to exist. the bungalow was the perfect setting. now we have several houses posted each day for us to admire, and better yet, we are talking about what we like and dont like about these houses. it is also a chance for many to see houses in areas, cities, towns and neighborhoods they will never visit in real life. bungalow heaven isnt a place in southern califorina, its a state of mind that exist everywhere there is a bungalow and someone to enjoy it. just my thoughts... |

I can't tell you all how much I enjoy Bungalow of the Day - I found this site because of my addiction to Sears houses but its terrific to have so much info on the A&C movement.
I'm tempted to buy a digital camera (I'm still SO 20th century) and start posting photos of Sears houses to add to the excitement here! |

Do it! I am on the verge of buying one myself but there are so bloody many, pixel shmixel. Then there is a learning curve, I'm just getting on to this computer. Are you looking at any camera in particular? I will post in Kit Homes with ones I suspect to be.
Donna, how did you come to be addicted to Sears houses? |

Hi Don;
I'm a new member and have enjoyed your photo' and comments along with everyone else involved. I have a bungalow under contract now in a beach community in CT. Can't wait to get in. Looks like all windows and doors are original. 100% verticle grain fir flooors. Moldings have been painted over. Will post a photo and other photos of other bungalows in town (lots of them) once I move in. |

Hey Wabash-
I have no idea what kind of camera to get - I'm just at the "Gee, Donna you really need to invest in a digital camera" stage. As for my addiction to Sears Houses... well, it all started off with Stickley. A friend of mine said that she thought she'd picked up an unmarked Stickley buffet and I realized that although I'd been hearing about Stickley, I had no idea what the style looked like. I ended up at this website checking out Stickley and saw the section on Sears houses. My neighborhood is tiny and I'd always been told there was this Sears house in my neighborhood so I decided to figure out which one it was. It turns out that it's a Rodessa but in all of my studyings I'd stored some other ones in my brain and then started seeing them all over Cincinnati!! My first two spottings were a crescent and an osborn. They are pretty distinctive so they were easy to spot and then I became COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY HOOKED on them. Some of the girls in my girl scout troop can even spot them because I share my knowledge with them, whether they like it or not! I hope that's not TMI! Donna |

i'm pretty much the same way. i started with a house i saw in a paut deutchner (SP?) book on bungalow shown on the cover of a 1915 bungalow magazine. i recognized it as similar to a house in my old neighborhood and wrote to him. then i found this site and the sears/kits references. browsing i found that house listed as an osborn. i have since found 4 more. plus several avalons and possibly a cresent or two. again, these are very distinct forms and easily identified. i probably past many other sears less prominent that i just dont have enough brain space allocated to.

I bought my house 25 years ago just because I liked the look of it. One day a conductor I work with on the railroad stopped by and told me it was an Aladdin kit home an gave a lot of background on the family that originally built it. Not much happened until the U of Mich put all of the catalogues in line and I hunted down the original page for mine. Since then I've found this site, spotted 3 more kit homes here and have had a lot of fun. What I really enjoy is giving owners a copy of the page from the original catalogue.
