Hello to all! I recently joined the forum after spending days reading all the posts. Smile What a wonderful place!

We recently purchased this home in southern Illinois which was built on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi river. The home was built in 1927. What style of house we have?

Eclectic.

When your house was built in the 1920s, architects, designers, and builders were experimenting with all kinds of combinations. Your house is a good example of that.

The gambrel roof is usually typical of the Dutch Colonial Revival, and paired up with the other classical revival elements of the roof pitch, triangular gables, and the band of trim at the eave, it was probably described at the time as a modern colonial.

That said, the wider eaves are a Prairie or Craftsman style marker typical of earlier bungalows and the windows certainly have a more bungalow feel to them.

Brickwork was very hot during the 20s and yours is gorgeous. Love the screened porch.

Rikki,
You took the words right out of my mouth because a soon as I saw it I yelled Dutch Roof.

I concur with all of your comments as well as the fantastic brick job. To me it was out of sight and so even. That was a true master who laid those brick. Forgive me Mam but I forgot your name however I wish you welcome to these forums and you will find most anything dealing with the A&C movement.

Respectfully,

Ralph Jones

Good morning Rikki and Ralph!

Thank you so much for your prompt replies and sharing your knowledge. Thank you also for your kind words about our house.

When we first saw the house we were in awe of the beautiful brick work and immediately fell in love with the porch which overlooks the mississippi river. Once we stepped inside we were totally hooked because of the wonderful oak trim throughout, the brick fireplace, the butlers panty and the open floor plan...really just everything about the house.

We've begun to decorate the interior in the arts and crafts style. Could anyone possibly point me in the direction of a decorating forum for ideas, colors, etc?

Thanks again for the information.

Willow

Willow,

You might want to peruse the Bookstore for design books, try a Google image search, and subscribe to a few magazines for inspiration. I know that they have a forum at Am. Bungalow, also.
