I have a rather ordinary, if nice, 1950's cape cod home. I've become enamored of the arts and crafts style, and sometimes there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of exterior differences. I was playing around with Photoshop, using a photo of my house and a site with photos of Sears kit houses. I snagged the porch from one and Photoshopped it onto my house. I've been thinking for some time that I'd like to put a porch on my house, and I think this just might work to give me a bungalow effect without having to move.

Looking for opinions. Is this idea completely insane, or might it just work?

Here's how I envision the porch...

Hello Friend,
I can see how it would improve your house and give you a nice porch and an English Tudor effect. I like your style of the brick columns on the corners to a point and then the wood columns to the beams. The Tudor trim would make it stand out and give you a pleasant design.

Respectfully,

Ralph Jones

I like it. You took the porch from the Uriel/Conway which I think is a pretty nice looking Sears!

I might be crazy too. I found your posting because I want to change my cape to a bungalow too. I haven't decided if I want a gable porch as you've illustrated or an extended front roof creating a flat roofed front porch w/ square dormers.

If you think you might want to update and stay with the cape style, check out the book "Updating Classic America Capes" by Jane Gitlin.
