Julia,

Be patient... You never know what folks will be interested in. Lots of folks don't like to speak out in forums and just lurk and learn. Greene and Greene are top notch and will eventually draw those interested in the site and the designers.

Since you got to stay at the Gamble House you probably got to see portions of it not viewable by the general public. Do you recall anything you found interesting?

Fred

i just saw thenew style 1900 at the bookstore.

there is a feature article on the use of G&G as a model for the house in the movie Zathura. it had a disclaimer "no house was harmed in the making of this movie."

the sets are extremely well done recreations based on the gamble house and others. the article shows the original and set pieces and compares similarities.

the use of A&C style in movies and interiors has be a topic of severl forums over the last year or so. it just show how pervasive the interest in the revival and style in general is.

most folks, even if they arent able to label or identify what it is feel a sense of comfort and warmth when they see a well balanced A&C house of interior. it feels like home. i'm sure most of our generation if not the youngest set, have memories of being in period houses, either living in one, having a friend or relative that lived in one.

We saw the Dana-Thomas house in Springfield, Illinois over Christmas. Yes, they give tours and they have a website.

the greene's continue to gain popularity. stickley, who has been making reissue of both roycroft and limbert pieces now has a line of greene and greene reproductions.

this has raised some eyebrows on other forums since the pieces are made in viet nam. the concern is that the quality may be less than seen in the originals and less than the current production of stickley in NY.

if the quality issues can be controlled, this could be a boon to enthusiasts. the numbers of G&G pieces is very small compared to stickley and even roycroft, so this may be the only way for many to have access. i havent seen the prices and am curious as to how they compare to modern craftsman like daniel peart or tom strangeland. and to more commercial folks like barn furniture.

Please understand my desire to close this down due to spam. I will see if this helps and open the post in time. Anyone is free to begin a new Greene & Greene post at any time.

Thanks,
Fred
