One of Canada's best annual antique shows (2 per year actually) happened yesterday, in Dudas, Ont. It attracts dealers from all over Canada and a few from the States - about 300 total. I was happy to see more Mission / Arts & Crafts stuff than the last couple years.

A few highlights....

Nice L&JG rocker was probably the best 'major maker' piece I saw, but not the most expensive compared to some big generic settles and sofas. The rocker was tagged $975 (Canadian).

Another of my favourite dealers, with lots of good stuff.

Just to be a little different, heres a nice Liberty pewter set designed by Archibald Knox, for $950 I think.

Here's a huge Roseville pot and stand combo, at $680.

Hey Stonecat,

Thanks for giving us a glimpse of the Canadian scene. It is always a delight to browse vicariously. Any copper or silver of note?

I didn't catch the price on the table. The lamps were $350 range I recall, and just as I took the picture the lady on the right dropped in to the booth to pick up the one she has in her hand - purchased earlier.

I didn't see any top copper other than three Vetcraft pieces, all priced just a little too high in my opinion. This show happens again in the Fall so maybe the prices will lighten up if the dealers don't want to carry over the pieces to next year. I saw a couple typical Roycroft bookends and letter openers, etc. There was lots of unmarked copper, some good, some bad. I have to say I'm no silver expert so I can't help on that front. Honestly I have never really seen any significant A&C silver up here.

I picked up a few 'accessories' - nothing too exciting, but stuff to fill up corners - keyed tenon bookrack table w/straight grain but some extra effort in the cuts and tongue and groove gluing, a bevelled mirror w/quarter cut stamped Hespeler Furniture Co. (a local old town, name since changed), an unmarked footed and hammered copper bowl, and a floor lamp post to add to my growing collection of projects Smile. I got this group for the same money that a single Vetcraft piece was going for.

Now that is is fall, what are the dates for this show?

If you go more, would you take more pictures?

When I go looking, I take pictures of the pieces and thier price tags. If I am really interested, I write sizes and the name of the dealer in my notebook. I hate it when I find something really interesting and forgot which antique dealer has the piece.

Bev,

The fall version actually happens in 5 days, Sept.9. Here's a link:

I always take my camera and I always ask first if I can take a picture or two. Some dealers are reluctant (I guess they think you are "casing the joint" as the saying goes) but most are quite happy to let me. I see other people doing it as well and I know that one of the anitques journals up here has staff running around snapping pics. I've picked up several pics of shopmarks for my data base at this show - I always get strange looks when I ask "Can I take a picture of the back of your chair?"

Are you going to that show this year?

I wish that we still lived in upstate New York. They have some great antique shows in the fall there. It would also be an easy hop to Canada.

If an American was to go shopping there, would the dealers take the American dollar or would we have to change our money just in case we want to buy something?

Just curious.

Yes, I'm going. I thought about going to Brimfield this week instead but work is getting in the way. I think it would be a 7 or 8 hour drive to Brimfield for me, whenever I finally go.

As far as US money goes, I think every dealer would gladly take it at par given its worth about 10% more per dollar Big Grin, haha, but I think most would just do a little mental math for the conversion. Its pretty routine to deposit, convert, cash out, and buy US money in Canadian banks. Most banks up here have a stash of US money on hand.
