Eek Eek Smile Smile

So how well were things selling, and what was selling better than what? Was there a real difference between the two shows in terms of sales activity? Was there anything in the 'affordable' range at the Grove or was it all high end? Did you hit the book fair? Any seminars? Did you see anyone famous or any big players other than Rago? What was the best looking contemporary stuff? Did you hear anyone talking about this forum, LOL?? Big Grin

i'll check the exhibitor list for the newcomb, cant remember right now. list is at the office.

all the biggies were there. jerry cohen, pierce fox, fitzsimmons, jmw, rudd.

i saw kaplan walking around, but didnt see beth cathers.

talked to ron vanostrand for a bit about copper..

the renaissance show was very small, didnt see that much traffic, nothing like grove park. the cocktail/happy hour in the grove park great room was shoulder to shoulder.

the style 1900 cocktail party saturday night was packed. they gave out canvas bags filled with stuff, a rago t-shirt, a 20th anniversary Style 1900, a small stencil from ford craftsman studio, some hubbard motto coasters from dard hunter, a rookwood special auction catalog from rago. he was there handing out shirts, jennifer strauss was handing out bags with maryln fish.

as i said earlier, i was overwhelmed, awed and totally happy...

i recommend it to anyone. we are already talking about next year...

i have a tendency to want to touch a finish and feel the grain. i get somewhat self concious at times, thinking people look at me strangely...

as i was nearing David Rudd's Dalton Antiques booth, i saw Robert Kaplan (partner of Beth Cathers and the biggest A&C dealer in the country) slowly drag his hand across the back of the L&JG prarie settle in passing.

now i dont feel so odd. well, actually i do, but that's another story....

That settle is a classic, maybe LJGs top piece and certainly in the top ten of the iconic designs that screams A&C. There's a place up here doing repros of it, and even these look great. I wouldn't hesitate to get a repro because an original will probably always be out of reach. There's something to be said for running a finger over a piece - does it feel like it's been overcoated, is the wax heavy, has the grain raised naturally over time or been sanded down, just how original is it, kind of thing. I think we (some of us anyways) understand the need to worship these damn things...its a frickin addiction Big Grin

i agree. there are certain classic forms that we all would like to have but can never attain.

the quality of the new furniture was amazing. voorhees, artew, black river mission, debbie zito (extraordinary, and original), bertucci for furniture. the number of new pottery makers was a total surprise. i would buy from any of the companies that exhibited without question.

i do have one complaint about the show. there were too many people in my way that kept me from sitting in every chair and opening every bookcase or admiring the glaze on every pot...

i want to go back and stay at the grove park inn when there is no big event, so i can sit in front of the fireplace and sip a glass of wine and relax. there are probably as many pieces of period furniture in the hotel as there were at the show.

When were your pictures taken then, because they don't really show that many people in them. One would get the impression it was not crowded at all.

...so if one goes, is it very much preferred to stay at the GPI and be part of the main buzz and just ignore the other show, or is it more practical to stay at the Renny and trip over to GPI only as needed/wanted to avoid the crowds...I'm thinking the preference would be GPI all the way, despite the crush...

rooms become available jan 1st for that years show. they are usually booked by close of business that day. it is a first come first served basis, but the regulars que up.

they currently show that time, next feb 22-24 as not available.

the shuttle that runs between the GPI and the Renaissance is dependable and runs at least every hour or more. street parking around GPI is a nightmare, since it is on a narrow winding road going up the mountain, but many folks do it.

i think you can get rooms at the renaissance until close to the show, but i would recommend booking as soon as possible.

as for the pictures, i hung around until a group would move on and then snapped.

yes, i think being in the buzz is the way to go.

I agree with Don, it's almost too much to take in at once. The grove park inn is amazing in it's own right, and then you throw in all these overly impressive antiques and it's too much. Well, too much for one weekend anyway. You can't possibly soak it all up in such a short amount of time. Everyone should go. And if your going to buy anything come over to the affordable show at the "Renny" as stonecat put it. Although we didn't have near the traffic as the grove park, I sold alomst everything I took down there. I took about 25-30 pieces of furniture and came home with about 10, maybe. If your going to look and just be overwhelmed, the grove park is the place, if you want to buy something for your home to enjoy, come to our show and take a look. Next year there's going to be an auction before the show I think on thursday night, or friday. That should be exciting. Can't wait to go back!

I'll buy number two... Smile

In the meantime there's a whole year of other events to consider as well; the Chicago Eastwood Gallery Show in May, Brimfield X 3, and another huge one in New York outside of Syracuse in August (name escapes me, Madison maybe)
