Great find like I said. Congratulations. Can't wait to see it with new patina.

There is some loss in a couple of places but Mike thinks that it can be fixed. His Dip is more of a Van Erp kind of brown instead of the patina as seen on the platter from the Rago catalog which I'm not sure I care for anyway. It's about what I like and I like it darker. I'm going to make a small oak stand for it to display on my Stickley Bros. China Cabinet which should look grand. My only disappointment is that I can't possibly find anything this good for the price again don't you think?

wow, that is fantastic. It looks perfect other than the patina. I am happy to hear you are going to spend the money to have the patina re-done properly. I guess you can afford to since you didn't exactly break the bank on the purchase! Don't be dissapointed - just because that is a once in a lifetime find doesn't mean there can't be another one...right? Smile Good work - and keep hunting! (and post pictures when it is finished) - by the way, what is the charge for the patination of something like that?

Actually if it ends up being what he said it might be it's pretty reasonable, If there is no hard stripping with thinner it will be about 175.00, if he has to totally strip it clean of laquer, which I don't think it has any on it then we're talking about 225.00 I'm sure there will be some stripping as you can see in the enlarged pic the paint drops which I was not able to get off with super fine steel wool, I figured I could hurt it any more than it was already. As you say, the shape is right on, no dings at all.

For the price I paid, it's cheap, I was ready for 300.00 and I still would have had a pretty good piece!

Years ago, I got a quote for taking laquer off of new brass knobs to get them powder coated black. (I finally found what I wanted and did not have to go that route.) The guy said that they put the metal in a kiln to burn off the laquer.

I thought that that was a neat idea. It might help you.

The platter looks great. Good buy, good find.

Bev.

Dano,

Who is doing the work for you? (which Mike)? The paint should easily come off with any stripper or thinner and will have no effect on the copper. Good luck on the job and be sure to let us see the results.

Sorry, should have specified, Mike Ashford from Evergreen Studios will be doing the work, since he is west coast and I'm an Arizonan, less distance for it to travel.

I'm a furniture guy myself and can re-finish just about anything, but this metalware stuff is all new to me, There is something about the patina in a finely crafted item that is peaceful to me, can't really describe it. My wife thinks I'm crazy, she might be right but I know what I like...

Just letting you all know that I sent off the platter to Evergreen Studios this morning, don't know how long it will be gone but will let you all know when it's done and post pics.

Thanks
