bungalow court of the day may 29, 2006 by don szymanksy (created on )Gallery | Comments

since this is a holiday, i thought i would add something extra today. this is a bungalow "court", a narrow space with only walks and some green space between the houses. there are a number of these around town, so i may do some others later. the lots are narrow and shallow as well, the backs of some houses directly on the alley.

I've never heard of a bungalow court before. Do the homes sit on a street or do cars only have alley access? Do the homes have their own yards or is it a common area?

there is only a walk(s) between the houses, vehicle traffic is in the alleys. there is no front yard, or only postcard stamp size. some have very small back or side yards.
some are directly on the alley.

bungalow courts were fairly common in the day. there are images in several of the major books, bungalow style, bungalow nation, the bungalow, etc. in most cases, there was more green space in the center, small parks almost.

this is one of the narrowest ones i have seen. i will post another soon that may be narrower.

i know of at least five here in louisville of varying scale, from large 2 story plus to 500-800 sq ft cottages.

"Oh, for Pete's sake" says Donna with her mouth hanging open.

That is too cool but you would REALLY have to like your neighbors in a bungalow court! Can you imagine what one feud could do?
